Wildlife enthusiasts lacked a good app that would provide useful information about the outdoors. There are several geographical, biological, and ecological digital products, but they are currently only available to wildlife management professionals or academic researchers using desktops.
Jordan Ahee, the founder of BiosphereGPS, and a project biologist at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), developed an advanced spatial analysis technique that becomes a basis for the development of the mobile app by the Visla team.
The iOS app allows browsing illustrated maps of mammals, birds, amphibians, and insects in North America. The app uses an advanced geographic information engine to process and quickly display map data.
To display and position map layers we used ArcGIS SDK for iOS. It allowed us to precisely place and process custom GIS layers over the base map. The application flawlessly displays and manipulates 10+ environment layers.
The application allows to take a snapshot of landscape around and presents the detailed composition of environment in radius of 1.5 km.
Environment layers displayed on the map create a complete view of the natural landscape. Thanks to that, users can plan and pick ideal places for outdoor activities.
The application's awards and challenges system makes exploring the outdoors fun. Users can earn 20+ different rewards ordered into 3 tiers (bronze, silver & gold).
