Camps Australia Wide – the biggest database of free camping and caravan parks in Australia asked us to improve their existing mobile application.
Printed editions of “Camps Australia Wide” have many loyal customers. Unfortunately the digital version wasn’t so popular – until now!
The goal was clearly defined: improve the overall user experience as well as fix usability issues and performance bugs to create a top-notch application which can become a successful product.
To identify the strengths and weaknesses of the existing application we did a thorough analysis of competitive apps and reached out to existing CAMPS users. We carried out user interviews and online surveys to learn who they are, what they need and what they like and dislike about the app.
Research findings were used as a guide to redesign the app. We created a simple prototype – interactive wireframes – that allowed us to test crucial features at the very early stage of the design process. Such an approach allows us to save unneeded and costly redevelopments in the future.
We carried out remote usability tests with participants based in Australia to check how our prototype works (or not) for them. We iterated and tested different ideas to make sure that the proposed solutions work for a target audience.
User feedback was then taken into account during the graphic design of user interface. Among other things we used bigger, higher contrast fonts and UI elements to make it easier for older users to interact with the app’s UI.
Once most of screens and interactions were designed, the development team begun work. Both UX and development teams worked closely together to produce the final release of the app. Close cooperation of both teams guaranteed that the final release of the application was tailored for every need.
The user experience was composed with older users in mind. Following this rule, we did a complete overhaul of app’s user interface.
Iconography was improved. We designed a simple and consistent icon set depicting the sites’ features. To help explain what the icons meant, we added easy to access tooltips.
Search functionality was rebuilt from scratch to provide a more natural experience. We added search by cities, towns, villages and natural parks.
Filters were reorganized to make them more straightforward and easier to use. They were organised hierarchically, grouped into logical sections and unused ones were removed.
In Visla, we believe that every detail counts. All of the elements, functional and visual ones, those more and less important, need to work together in a harmony to create an immersive experience that users will love. This is the approach that we take.
